  • The Legacy of David Foster Wallace

    Lee Konstantinou

Other than the myriad reviews of David Foster Wallace’s posthumous novel, The Pale King, very little published material has grappled with the tremendous hole in American letters left by the early death of this singularly talented, greatly insightful writer. While the essays in this volume do make Wallace’s writing more accessible to those who don’t know his work as well, it’s a particular treat for those of us who have spent late nights scouring YouTube for his few public appearances. In other words, it’s the definitive analysis of the author’s work, valuable for the uninitiated, essential for the obsessed.

  • The Eighty-Dollar Champion

Hey horse lovers, or anyone who enjoys a true story of an underdog. The Eighty-Dollar Champion is the story of a horse rescued from a truck headed to the glue factory. Good reading for teens who love horses too.

  • The Chemistry of Tears

    Peter Carey

I loved the voices of the two narrators in this novel. Both the modern day Catherine Gehrig, with her slightly snide tone, and the bewildered Henry Brandling way back in the nineteenth century. They are both attempting to deal with incomprehensible grief, and both are the instruments of an art that is beyond either of them. There's is also great bits about horology and automotons. It’s a quick read full of Carey’s surprising charm. Read it.

  • August and then Some

    David Prete

An exceedingly well conceived and executed novel about sin and redemption, somewhat reminiscent of Dennis Lehane's Mystic River. Prete has a keen ear for dialogue and an eye for describing a scene with economy and power.

  • Drop Dead Healthy

    A. J. Jacobs

While on a 2-year quest for maximum health, A.J. Jacobs consults the experts, reads the (often conflicting) studies, and puts himself through grueling diet and workout regimens (some downright silly) with the aim toward physical and mental perfection.  Hilarious and informative, studies may show that this is the best self-improvement book ever!
